Chapter Twenty

The four of us stood outside the trailer. I wanted to scream until my lungs hurt. Not only was Santa a total jerk, but Uncle Dale—who never met a stranger he didn’t want to debate Bigfoot’s shoe size with—TOTALLY CLAMMED UP!

“You tried,” said Gumdrop.

I glared at him. “I failed.”

“Bobbie, I’m so sorry,” said Uncle Dale. “It’s just . . . I thought he . . . I couldn’t.”

“You thought he . . . ?” I closed my eyes. “I don’t care. Can we please just go home now?”

“Pssst,” said a voice behind us.

We turned around. A reindeer was peering out from the side of the trailer. An actual reindeer. With antlers and everything! But there was something strange about him. I mean, other than the fact that he talked. It took me a second, but then I saw it: the tips of his antlers glowed bright red.
